Solar Energy Storage

Storage of solar energy is a key item within photovoltaic facilities for those users who want to be fully disconnected from the conventional power grid

Solar Energy is meant to take advantage of sunlight and transform it into electricity for our use. On one hand, this process includes the solar panels that receive the radiation from the sun and transform it into energy and, on the other hand, the solar batteries which are used to store the solar energy.

As we have indicated in countless previous entries posted on our Univergy Solar blog, Solar Self-consumption Systems have many advantages but one big drawback, solar energy storage.

Storage of solar energy is a key item within photovoltaic facilities for those users who want to be fully disconnected from the conventional power grid, but this storage system for surplus energy is the item that increases the price of facilities the most.

For many years now, work has been invested in technology to reduce the costs of these storage systems, making them also more sustainable, in which case, green hydrogen is one of the most viable alternatives in this regard.

Regarding this topic, there is a question that all users ask when deciding to install a solar self-consumption system:

Should all solar self-consumption facilities have storage systems?

Only users who opt for isolated Solar Energy systems, i.e., in cases where their electricity depends solely and exclusively on the solar panels installed in their home or business, should have storage facilities.

An isolated solar self-consumption system is one that is completely disconnected from the conventional power grid (Iberdrola, Naturgy…) so that, in the case of solar panels, they would not receive sufficient solar radiation during the night or on cloudy days for example; in which case, they will not receive enough energy to generate electricity for the home. In these cases, batteries capable of storing solar energy must be installed.

Partial systems, which are not completely disconnected from the power grid, do not need to install these energy storage systems since they are still connected to a power source and, in the event they are unable to be fully self-supplied, they would still be connected to the grid for any power needs.
