Security for solar power systems

Security for solar power systems

Solar power systems have become increasingly common at household level. Whether it is because of the reduction of electricity bills or air pollution, the fact is that many people have made the move toward solar energy, either photovoltaic or thermal.

Although it is true that the cost of this type of facility has decreased incredibly, solar panels are now 80% cheaper, the truth is that it still requires a big investment. Considering the above, it is important to protect this type of facility, to avoid any problems and the possible loss of the investment.

Insurance for solar power systems

First of all, solar panel installation companies often provide a warranty for their work and even offer private insurance for their products.

However, there is a way to secure our facilities, and you probably already have it at home. These are homeowners insurance policies, which usually include coverage related to renewable energy.

Within this type of insurance, we find a distinction between the premises (floors, walls, fixed facilities…) and the content (all those goods that are inside the house). Within this differentiation, there are insurance companies that consider this type of facility as part of the premises and others consider it as content. Here are some examples.

For the MAPFRE insurance company, solar facilities are within the premises. The conditions of these insurance policies state that fixed water and gas, electricity or solar power or similar facilities are part of the premises. In addition, under the conditions of this type of insurance, it is even said that they guarantee payment of the difference between the expected performance of the insured solar facilities and the real performance obtained.

The Linea Directa company also includes them within the premises, but as an exclusive item, where it includes all the elements of the solar power system.

In turn, companies such as Ocaso or Allianz, consider them as part of the content, that is, as a household good or asset.

Regardless of how it may be, these types of facilities are usually installed once the insurance has been contracted. Therefore, insurance companies require that any change in housing conditions be duly informed, especially if it involves something of such value. The insurer will then inform us whether these systems are insured or not, under what conditions or, if they are not included, how much the insurance premium would increase by including them.

The following homeowners insurance coverages are recommended for solar power systems:

  • Against material damage: To cover damage that the facilities may suffer, including damage from theft.
  • Civil works: This gives us advantages if the facilities are on the facade.
  • Liability: This coverage is mandatory if the facilities are to be connected to the power grid.

Alarms and anti-theft systems

Homeowners insurance will cover us financially if any incident or problem occurs that could harm or render our facilities unusable. However, there are security systems that prevent these types of problems from occurring, such as alarms or anti-theft systems.

It is important to have an alarm in your home, not just because of the solar power system. However, these types of facilities are placed outside the building, in which case, there are specific security systems for them.

Within these alarm systems, we can find light or sound signals within the facility itself or where an alarm is sent to any system with an Internet connection. We also find hybrid systems that include both types.

Other types of alarm systems are included within the facility itself. These are elements that protect the solar panel by means of a closed loop made of plastic optical fiber that attaches to the panel. If an attempt is made to remove or manipulate it, the cable breaks, activating the various alarm systems installed in the security equipment. This plastic optical fiber is also used to protect the perimeter of the solar facilities.

If you want to complete the security of your solar power system, you can install video security cameras that allow you to see what happens in the facilities in real time.
