The price of electricity: Ways to pay less with the new bill
On June 1, 2021, the new 2.0 TD rate for electricity bills entered into effect. In January this year we published a post explaining the differences between the old and new electricity rates, but the question now asked by all consumers is: How can I pay the lowest electricity rate on my monthly bill?
The most notable difference with the previous rate is that the new 2.0 TD rate now replaces the old 2.0 and 2.0, so we will have a single rate for access to the grid and time-of-use rates with 3 periods; peak, valley and flat:
Monday to Friday (winter and summer):
- Peak: 10:00am to 2:00pm and 6:00pm to 10:00pm
- Valley: Midnight to 08:00am
- Flat: 8:00am to 10:00am, from 2:00pm to 6:00pm and from 10:00pm to midnight
Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays: Valley only
Which period is cheaper?
Key periods to pay less on your electricity bill are early in the morning on weekdays and anytime on weekends:
- Monday to Friday: Flat period from 00:00am to 08:00am
- Weekends: Valley period the entire weekend.
Another change to take into consideration is the number of kilowatts contracted. In this case it can vary depending on each time segment and, to save money, we must lower the number of kilowatts contracted in the peak period and raise this number in the valley period, but this will depend absolutely on our consumption habits.
How do you know when the cheapest kW is available?
The price of kWh changes every day, for this reason, Red Eléctrica Española publishes daily the price that will be in effect the following day. You can check this here.
What is the best option to save on your electricity bill?
Changes in electricity rates are common in our country, with prices rising from time to time and regulations being subject to new resolutions. However, the only constant is that change after change, consumers are usually the ones that end up losing.
By installing solar panels in your home, business or residents’ association, it is possible to obtain a noticeable reduction in your electricity bill. You can calculate the price of your installation and the monthly reduction you receive by using our virtual calculator.
